(This is NOT required but is a great option for those that visit campuses often)

By downloading the app and creating your Raptor Safe Visitor Passport, you’ll verify your identity and complete a one-time background check, eliminating the need to scan your driver’s license each time you visit a campus.

Notice from Taylor County Public Health District
02/24/2025
This is not intended to cause alarm but rather to inform you that Taylor County has heightened its situational awareness.

For Situational Awareness:
The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District is monitoring a measles outbreak in Gaines County and surrounding areas. As of 2/13/2025, Texas DSHS reports 29 confirmed cases—24 in unvaccinated individuals and 5 with unknown vaccination status. With our region’s close ties to Lubbock, Taylor County should remain vigilant for potential cases. Report any suspected cases immediately to the health department at 325-721-8285.

Key Information:

  • Transmission: Airborne and surface contact. Highly contagious—90% of unvaccinated contacts will be infected.
  • Symptoms: Fever, cough, sore throat, red eyes, followed by white spots in the mouth (day 2-3) and a rash starting at the hairline (day 3-5). Fever may exceed 104°F at rash onset.
  • Incubation Period: 7-21 days. Most contagious 3-4 days before rash appears.
  • Complications: Pneumonia, hearing loss, encephalitis, blindness, and in rare cases, death.
  • Testing: PCR test required for confirmation.
  • Treatment: Supportive care. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) available—MMR vaccine effective within 72 hours of exposure.
  • Prevention: MMR vaccination is the best defense. Schools should verify immunization records or conduct titer testing.

Guidance for Schools & Childcare Centers:

  • Report unvaccinated individuals with cold symptoms to epidemiology (325-721-8285).
  • Any child with a rash should be sent home and referred for measles evaluation.
  • Contact epidemiology for assistance in suspected cases.
With measles’ high contagiousness, proactive measures are critical to preventing local spread. Thank you for your cooperation in protecting our community.
