District of Innovation Committee Nominations
10/01/2024

During the 84th Legislative Session, HB 1842 was passed, allowing Texas public schools to become Districts of Innovation. This designation allows school districts to obtain exemptions from certain provisions of the Texas Education Code. Merkel ISD is exercising this opportunity to gain more local control and flexibility in order to improve educational outcomes for the benefit of the students and community.

It is time to update our team. If you are interested in joining this committee or know someone who would be a valuable asset, please complete this DOI nomination form.

Reminder regarding MES Pick Up and Drop Off Procedures
10/01/2024
Hello, Badger Nation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is homecoming this week and there are soooo many exciting things going on!

Just a quick reminder:
-Please do not drop your child off in the parking lot, unless you are going to walk them up.
-If you have a young Lil Badger (PreK and K) that struggles with getting in or out of the car, please use Lane 1. It is so much safer when loading and unloading.
-When picking students up, Lane 1 & 2 are for car pickup only
-Exit 3 is utilized for parents/guardians that prefer to park and walk up to get their child

There are many things going on each day when releasing approximately 600 kids, and we appreciate you helping us do it safely!

Thanks again,
Mrs. Carey

Reminder of When to Keep Your Sick Child Home
09/24/2024

Reminder...if your child is sick, please keep him/her home!

A PDF of the illness chart is attached to this post.

A student has to be fever-free for 24 hours (below 100.0) without the use of fever reducing medications and also free from vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours from the last episode.  The 24-hour exclusion rule can be verified in the student handbook, which can be found on the Merkel ISD website.

Please do not send your child to school for the nurse to check temperature, or give your child fever-reducing medicine before school.  This spreads germs to other children in the school and on school buses.

Covid Guidance Effective March 2024
The state has updated Covid school exclusion criteria to align with other respiratory illnesses like the flu.
Students can return when fever free (less than 100.0) for 24 hours without use of fever reducing medicine.

UPDATED - Color I NEED TO STAY HOME IF.pdf

Dear Parents and Guardians,
09/16/2024
We want to inform you about recent social media posts mentioning potential threats against schools in general (all over the state). While there has been no direct threat to Merkel ISD, we take all such matters seriously and work closely with local law enforcement to discern the impact on MISD.

Please discuss with your child the importance of reporting any concerning posts they encounter on social media to you or their campus administration. This will enable us to investigate appropriately alongside the Merkel Police Department. Although many of these threats have been false claims or hoaxes (resulting in arrests), we must address them promptly.

If you have any questions or information that might assist us, please contact the school office.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

New Procedures for Medication at School
07/31/2024
We are implementing some changes for medication at school.

If your child needs a prescription medication, such as ADHD medicine or antibiotics, during the school day, we need a doctor's order to administer the medication along with the prescription bottle. The reason for this is that once the prescription bottle is gone we have no proof of a doctor's order. We need the doctor's order for our records.  Please have the doctor order include the time to give the medication, such as: after lunch or a specific time (NOT three times a day).

Action plans signed by the doctor will cover inhalers and nebulizer meds, seizure meds, EpiPens and diabetic meds.

If your child needs an over-the-counter medicine during the school day, that is not on our standing orders, then we will need a doctor's order to give the medication.  It is a requirement for nurses to have a doctor's order to give ANY medicine regardless of practice setting.

The standing orders from the school medical director cover most medications, but check with your school nurse PRIOR to bringing ANY over-the-counter medication to school to see if you need a doctor's order.  If you don't want to get a doctor's order, you are welcome to come to school and give a medication.

With any medication, the doctor's order will be good for the entire school year unless there are changes to the medication, dose or time given.

Thank you for your understanding,
Health Services

Survey on November 2023 Bond Initiative
01/09/2024

Dear Badger Nation,

Following the November Bond Initiative vote, I want to express my sincere appreciation to all community members who participated in the recent vote and contributed to the democratic process.

While the outcome of the bond initiative may not have aligned with our collective hopes, it is essential to recognize the importance of community engagement and the value of diverse opinions.

It is not uncommon for bond initiatives to face challenges, and setbacks are part of the democratic process. However, it is crucial that we view the recent outcome not as a conclusion but as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to our community's well-being.

To gather your opinions and concerns, I have created a brief survey.

Survey Link

Your participation in this survey will contribute to open discussions and help us revise the bond proposal to reflect our community's needs better.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing your valuable input.
