Dear MISD Families,
We want to tell you about a new state law. This law will change how students use cell phones and other devices like smartwatches and earphones during the school day.
About the Law
House Bill 1481 (HB 1481) was passed by the Texas Legislature. It will start in the 2025-2026 school year. Here's what it means:
-
Students cannot use cell phones during the instructional day.
-
All schools must make and follow rules about using devices during class. These rules should limit or stop device use.
Why This Matters
This law was made to help students do well in school. It does this by reducing things that take away from learning. It also helps students focus better in class. Research shows that not using phones during the school day helps students stay on task. It also helps them learn more and make better friends.
What to Expect at Merkel ISD
At Merkel Independent School District (ISD), we are looking at and changing our school rules. We are doing this to follow House Bill 1481 (HB 1481). We will share all the details before school starts. We want to give families early notice so everyone can get ready for this change.
We want to make a safe, focused, and respectful place for learning. We thank you for working with us as we make these changes.
Let's work together to help our students do well, one focused day at a time!
