Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medication Reminders
11/19/2024
Please review the following medication guidelines for school:

Students are not permitted to carry any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) with them during the school day. The exception to this policy is students diagnosed with asthma, severe allergy or diabetes. State law allows these students to carry medication if a physician treatment plan is received and the student is mature and responsible.

If your child needs a prescription medication, such as ADHD medicine, prescription pain medication or antibiotics, during the school day, it must stay in the nurse's office and we need a doctor's order to administer the medication along with the prescription bottle (no baggies).

The reason for the doctor's order is that once the prescription bottle is gone we have no proof of a doctor's order. We need the doctor's order for our records.  Please have the doctor's order include the time to give the medication, such as: after lunch or a specific time (NOT three times a day).

Action plans and diabetes treatment plans signed by the doctor will cover inhalers and nebulizer meds, seizure meds, EpiPens and diabetic meds.

If your child needs an over-the-counter medicine during the school day, that is not on our standing orders, then we will need a doctor's order to give the medication.  It is a requirement for nurses to have a doctor's order to give ANY medicine regardless of practice setting.

The standing orders from the school medical director cover most medications, but check with your school nurse PRIOR to bringing ANY over-the-counter medication to school to see if you need a doctor's order.  If you don't want to get a doctor's order, you are welcome to come to school and give a medication.

With any medication, the doctor's order will be good for one school year unless there are changes to the medication, dose or time given.

Thank you for your understanding,
Health Services Staff
