New Procedures for Medication at School
07/31/2024
We are implementing some changes for medication at school.

If your child needs a prescription medication, such as ADHD medicine or antibiotics, during the school day, we need a doctor's order to administer the medication along with the prescription bottle. The reason for this is that once the prescription bottle is gone we have no proof of a doctor's order. We need the doctor's order for our records.  Please have the doctor order include the time to give the medication, such as: after lunch or a specific time (NOT three times a day).

Action plans signed by the doctor will cover inhalers and nebulizer meds, seizure meds, EpiPens and diabetic meds.

If your child needs an over-the-counter medicine during the school day, that is not on our standing orders, then we will need a doctor's order to give the medication.  It is a requirement for nurses to have a doctor's order to give ANY medicine regardless of practice setting.

The standing orders from the school medical director cover most medications, but check with your school nurse PRIOR to bringing ANY over-the-counter medication to school to see if you need a doctor's order.  If you don't want to get a doctor's order, you are welcome to come to school and give a medication.

With any medication, the doctor's order will be good for the entire school year unless there are changes to the medication, dose or time given.

Thank you for your understanding,
Health Services
